Results of consideration regarding certification of plants grown in containers
According to ACT Organic Company Limited, we provide inspection and certification services for organic agricultural standards. Scope of plant production in the IFOAM-accredited, European Union (EU), and Canadian (COR) programs to you or your organization.
Last year, in May 2023, the company's ad hoc committee was tasked with reviewing the practical interpretation of organic standards regarding growing plants in containers. In such a way that the roots of the plant are not connected to the soil and the soil parent layer. The conclusions are as follows:
1. The IFOAM program cannot provide accreditation. This is because current standards do not support growing plants in containers in this way.
2. EU programs (Regulation 2018/848: Annex II Part I: 1.1–1.6) cannot be certified. Because the regulations specify that the plant must be planted in soil that connects the subsoil and the parent layer.
3. COR programs can certify with specific standards-based requirements. (CAN/CGSB-32.310-2020) Section 7.5The results of this interpretation will have an impact on entrepreneurs who currently grow crops in the manner mentioned above. Those affected must have a plan to change the growing characteristics of crops accordingly by December 31, 2023.
